GENERAL SUMMARY:
The System Engineer position will work in the client’s section in a third-shift operational role for the back end infrastructure, with a hybrid telework schedule requiring minimum of three days in office. 
The section is divided into two core disciplines (Systems and Security) and is currently staffed as follows:
Section Manager – (1) Lead Information Technology Systems Specialist
Systems – (1) Senior Information Technology Systems Specialist, (1) Lead User Technology Specialist, (2) User Technology Specialist and (1) Contracted VMware and Backend Systems Specialist.
Security – (1) Senior Information Technology Systems Specialist, (1) Lead User
Technology Specialist, and (1) Contracted Security Engineer.
Operations (third shift) – (1) Senior Information Technology Systems Specialist, (1) Contracted Systems Engineer, and (1) Contracted Network Engineer.
This client’s section is responsible for managing the enterprise and non-enterprise backend systems for the department and information security. This includes but is not limited to blade and standalone servers running primarily Windows operating systems, server and desktop virtualization utilizing VMware, and SAN storage. The section is responsible for system security such as vulnerability scans and remediation, system hardening, intrusion detection and prevention, and PCI compliance. The section is also responsible for afterhours operational, maintenance, and monitoring work in support of backend and network infrastructure, and information security.
LAN administration as well as second and third level desktop support is also provided by this section in support of the dedicated desktop and applications teams.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Monitor availability and status of back-end systems infrastructure for the Department to include servers, virtualization technologies, SAN storage, data center management, and disaster recovery;
• Performs the updates of software and firmware of back end systems infrastructure;
• Monitor and validate monthly security patches, scheduled reboots, and application startup, and take corrective actions and remediation as needed;
• Monitor systems logs and alerts in systems such as Solarwinds Orion, Cisco IPS, File Integrity Monitoring, etc.;
• Maintains secure systems configuration guides and conducts routine audits to validate compliance, perform remediations for configuration management and vulnerability remediation;
• Provide afterhours 1st and 2nd level support for end users and other technical staff;
• Initiate and/or coordinate with command center, security operations center, technical staff and other partners for event and incident management;
• Support other members of the Operations team with scheduled maintenance and problem resolution;
• Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
• Virtualization technology to include virtual data centers and desktops;
• Server and workstation computer hardware and software systems evaluation and troubleshooting techniques;
• SAN and NAS storage technologies utilizing Fibre channel and iSCSI;
• Technical monitoring techniques;
• Techniques, methods, and procedures for integrating hardware and software systems into user operational environments;
• Proficient with scripting languages used for managing Windows systems and backend infrastructure, such as PowerShell;
• System security methodologies;
• System engineering design, theory, and economics.
Ability to: 
• Comprehend and make inferences from material written in the English language.
• Learn job-related material through oral instruction, observation, structured lecture, and reading in the English language.
• Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
• Follow plans, policies, and procedures for hardware and software installations and operation.
• Utilize specialized technical software in support of hardware and software operational systems.
• Remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time.
• Analyze, interpret, summarize, and report research findings.
• Identify, plan, and conduct training sessions for other technical staff.

Additional Requirements:
• Appointments to this position are subject to appropriate background standards.
• Some positions require the use of personal or vehicles on business.
Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to
drive a vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
• Working hours for this position are Monday through Friday, 3rd shift, working a hybrid telework schedule requiring a minimum of three days in the office.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Possess a BA or BS degree in Computer Science, Information Security, or related field.
Five+ years of progressive experience in the field of systems engineering managing large scale environments. At least one year of experience supervising/leading highly technical staff. Additional experience and certifications related to VMware, Microsoft Server, and information security are desirable.
